First edition, consisting of the first twelve issues (two volumes, six issues each). Octavo (9 x 5.75 inches; 227 x 145 mm.). [9]-584; [4, title-leaf and contents], [9]-584 pages. Recent black half-leather over marbled paper covered boards; spine in five panels with four raised bands, lettered and ruled in gilt, boards ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed; speckled endpapers. All twelve original front wrappers bound in, no ads or rear wrappers. Leather lightly rubbed with a few negligible scuffs. Some minor soiling to the wrappers, light marginal wear and spot staining throughout the text. Charles College Library and Sulpician Seminary Library rubber stamps found in the first issue. Very good.

Contains four Mark Twain contributions: "By Rail through France" (volume 1: issue 1, pages 18-21), "A Californian Abroad—A Few Parisian Sights" (1:2, pages 120-126), "A Californian Abroad—Three Italian Cities" (1:3, pages 209-215) and "A Californian Abroad—A Mediæval Romance" (1:4, pages 316-320). All published together the following year in The Innocents Abroad. Also with ten contributions from Bret Harte, including first printings of his two most famous stories, "The Luck of Roaring Camp" (1:2, pages 183-189) and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" (2:1, pages 41-47); two from J. Publisher's perfect binding with the original front wrapper, published simultaneously with an issue in cloth. Full-page frontispiece, illustrated title-page and numerous ("over 130") in-text illustrations by Thomas Nast. Publisher's perfect binding in the original brown illustrated wrappers; Harper's advertisements printed on the inner wrappers. Rear joint split with the rear wrapper and final leaf detached; backstrip partially perished, mostly in the bottom half, with the title written in manuscript ink; wrapper edges somewhat chipped at the corners with minor paper loss, including one affecting the bottom corner of the illustration on the rear wrapper (removing a couple letters from Nast's name); few other trivial nicks, mostly along the joints and fore-edge; paper stamp affixed in the upper margin (with a small bruise where it seems there was an attempted removal at an earlier date). Pages with a couple very minor stains along the fore-edge; a few leaves with a very soft fold down the center; some occasional negligible discoloration in the margins; pages still quite supple. Good.

Contains Mark Twain's "Advice to Little Girls," which first appeared in The Celebrated Jumping Frog five years prior, and the first book appearance of "The Late Benjamin Franklin," previously published in The Piccadilly Annual and later collected in Mark Twain's Sketches. BAL 3332. (#10082).

“It is little appreciated that [Twain] may have written the first story to make use of the telephone as the central plot element. 'The Loves of Alonzo Fitz Clarence and Rosannah Ethelton' was published in 1878 (as one of the sketches collected here), the year after the telephone became practically available. Not only does Mark Twain project the existence of a telephone line spanning the American continent (something not accomplished until 1915) and the confusing consequences of being able to communicate instantaneously across such a distance, but he also anticipates the technology of wiretapping.” (David Ketterer, editor. Octavo (9.625 x 6.25 inches; 250 x 160 mm.). 50 guarded leaves with adhesive gummed lines pasted onto stubs and paginated by a rubber stamp in the upper corners. Supplied manuscript contents leaves tipped in. Publisher's cloth, green variant, spine and front board stamped in gilt and black, rear board stamped in blind; rear pastedown with an expanding pocket ("patent applied for"). Boards lightly rubbed with just a touch of soiling to the rear; spine ends and corners bumped and worn with some fraying and minor tears. Original handbill for a week-long run of the second silent adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper, originally released in 1915. Octavo (7 x 9.125 inches; 175 x 232 mm.). Single leaf, printed both sides with screening information on the recto and a collage with three images from the film and a quote from S. L. ("Roxy") Rothafel on the verso. Margins a little wrinkled with a couple soft creases in the corners; two faint fox marks on the recto and just a hint of soiling on the verso. Near fine. The Prince and the Pauper was initially adapted as a two-reel Edison production in 1909. Famous Players Lasky revisited the source material in 1915, releasing a five-reel feature that November, when feature-length film making was less than two years old in the United States. It starred Marguerite Clark in a dual role. By 1922, the conventional shelf-life of a silent film made in 1915 would have long expired, likely to be melted down for silver (why most films form the silent era are lost). Many of the films from major studios that survived did so because they were hits, continuously in demand, or because they were forgotten about by the end of their distribution runs; either reason could have been grounds to book something for a theatre manager as creative as Roxy Rothafel (who later opened the Roxy and Radio City Music Hall in New York).
