First edition with the K-P publisher's code (October 1940) on the copyright page; hardcover issue (one of 7000 copies such copies, issued simultaneously with 500 "thin paper" copies in a flexible binding). Octavo (8.5 x 5.75 inches; 215 x 145 mm.). [2], xxviii, [1], [1, blank], 402, [2, blank] pages. Full-page facsimile letter frontispiece. Publisher's dark brownish red cloth (terra-cotta imitation buckram), spine lettered and ruled in gilt with a blue gilt-lettered label, front board stamped in blue, outlining the publisher's device; top edge of the text-block trimmed, others rough-trimmed; plain endpapers. In the original dust jacket. Spine ends barely pushed; top corners just slightly bent; extremities with a touch of wear. A couple negligible soil spots to the text; title page with a tiny folded tear on the fore edge. Dust jacket spine panel faded in the red ink; edges somewhat worn with a few minor nicks and tiny chips, one short (about one inch) closed tear on the bottom edge of the front panel; mild soiling along the edges of the rear panel; price-clipped.
