Mark Twain [Samuel L. Clemens]. The Prince and the Pauper. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. Boston: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1887. First U. S. edition (preceded by a couple days by the London and Montreal editions), second reissue of the Webster issue (first being 1885), using the original sheets, purchased after James R. Osgood went bankrupt, and a cancel title-leaf; text corrected (second state). Octavo (8.25 x 6.5 inches; 210 x 165 mm.). [2, blank], 411, [1, blank] pages. Full page and in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's dark green cloth, spine and front board stamped in gilt and black; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers. Spine very slightly askew; joints and edges a little worn, more so at the spine ends and corners; corners softly bumped; covers a little rubbed, a few small patches of gilt lightly rubbed. Text block sagging just a hair; endpapers a little foxed with a medium stain on the rear pastedown; contemporary ownership signature. Very good. BAL 3402, this issue unrecorded. (#10092).
