[Mark Twain (contributor)]. John A. Jennings (editor). Readings from American Authors. Humorous and Pathetic. Dublin: Carson Brothers, [1884]. First edition. Octavo (7.125 x 4.625 inches; 180 x 115 mm.). [2, ads], 256, [32, ads] pages. Publisher's yellow paper covered boards, printed in red and black with a portrait of Mark Twain on the front board; all edges of the text block trimmed; ad pastedowns, no free endpapers. Covers soiled and rubbed, effacing most of the portrait on the cover and rendering most of the printed text illegible; joints and edges worn with much of the backstrip perished; corners bumped. Hinges stressed, with the appearance of disintegrated old repairs; over-opened throughout; page edges tanned and worn; leaf with pages 255-256 apparently reinserted. A good copy. Features eight Mark Twain contributions: "Curing a Cold," "The Ladies," "Aurelia's Unfortunate Young Man," "European Guides," "Punch, Bothers, Punch," "My Editing," "Concerning Chambermaids" and "The Danger of Lying in Bed." (#10183).
