Inscribed by the author on the recto of the frontispiece plate (unprinted): "To my good friend [--], with the best wishes of the author. / Geo H Ham." Octavo (7.75 x 5.25 inches; 200 x 135 mm.). xvi, 330, [6, blank] pages (note: endpapers are from the text, therefore pages [i]-[iv] are blank). Frontispiece and numerous illustrated plates, including a folding map, inserted throughout. Publisher's dark red cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, front board ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed. Backstrip faintly faded; light soiling along the upper edge of the front board; spine gilt tarnished; spine ends and corners very lightly worn; corners bent. Top edge of the text block lightly dust-soiled; slightly over-opened in a couple places; a couple leaves with small nick or diagonal crease on the fore-edge. Very good. The memoirs of a newspaper editor who met Twain multiple times. Twain is discussed on pages 142-146 at the start of chapter 10. (#10231).
