Octavo (9.25 x 6.125 inches; 235 x 155 mm.). xvi, 368, [2, blank]; [vii], 365, [2, ads], [3, blank] pages (note: first leaf of each volume blank). Illustrated frontispieces, with tissue guards printed in red, inserted in each volume. Publisher's dark blue ribbed cloth, spines lettered in gilt, front boards ruled in blind with Twain's facsimile signature stamped in gilt; top edges of the text block gilt, others rough trimmed; plain endpapers. In the original dust jackets and slipcase. Spine of the first volume slightly leaning; covers with some very mild soiling; extremities with a touch of wear. Text blocks with a couple instances of mild over-opening; shallow indentation from something laid in, since removed, in the upper portion of the gutter margin of pages 254-255 with some very light associated soiling. Dust jacket spine panels dulled with a few faint splashes, and a small interior hole on the second volume; edges worn with a few chips, mostly at the spine ends and fold edges, and a few close tears (the longest being about two inches, with some associate creases); very lightly rubbed with a touch of soiling. Near fine copies in about very good jackets. Slipcase intact and sturdy but rubbed with worn edges. BAL 3537. (#10136).
