Mark Twain [Samuel L. Clemens]. Following the Equator. A Journey around the World. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1897. First edition, variant with a single imprint on the inserted title-page (also seen with a double imprint with Doubleday & McClure; no priority, but Johnson preferred the single imprint). Octavo (8.875 x 5.75 inches; 225 x 145 mm.). [2, inserted title-leaf], [3]-712 pages. Frontispiece inserted, with tissue guard, and numerous full-page and in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered and elaborately stamped in gilt, front board stamped in gilt with a pictorial paper onlay; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers, flyleaves. Covers very lightly rubbed; spine ends bumped and a little worn; spine gilt very lightly worn. Text over-opened in a couple places with a few gatherings slightly sprung; some staining to the front free endpaper; title-page and tissue guard foxed. Very good. From the library of James Strohn Copley with his bookplate. BAL 3451. (#10118).
