"[T]his is a strange film. In order to talk about it you have to consider the period during which it was shot... when many Americans allowed themselves to be influenced by a certain propaganda attempting to represent all of France as collaborationist. Therefore I did this film, which was not intended to be shown in France, but only in America, to suggest to Americans that daily life in an occupied country was not as easy as some people may have thought. I must say that the results were extraordinary, and I'm pleased." (Jean Renoir, Jean Renoir Interviews edited by Bert Cardullo, Jackson: 2005. p. 15). (#10031).
