Publisher's light grayish-brown cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, front board stamped in gilt and black; all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers, flyleaves. Spine just barely leaning; spine ends and corners tapped and very lightly worn; faint soiling to the covers; gilt on the front board a little tarnished, black stamping worn. Rear endpapers with some minor staining (possibly glue residue, also on pages 258-259) and closed tear to the paper near the bottom of the hinge (about one and one-half inches); mild over-opening between pages 176 and 177; contemporary gift inscription on the front flyleaf and rubber stamped on the title-page and start of the text by the original vendor, Simpson & Crawford Department Store.
