Publisher's yellowish brown textured (faux alligator skin) cloth, spine and front board lettered in black; top edge gilt, others untrimmed; plain endpapers. Joints and backstrip a little worn, tear to the cloth, with some minor loss, at the base of the spine; touch of soiling, including a small blackish spot on the rear board; corners bent. Page edges ruffled, rear endpaper particularly on the rough side and slightly discolored along the fore-edge. Very good, a brighter copy than sometimes seen. Twain's review, on pages xi-xli, first appeared in the April 1887 issue of Century Magazine; an excerpt appears in the U. S. edition. Twain prepared his own edition in 1900. BAL 3420. (#10099).
