[Mark Twain (commentary); Caroline B. Le Row. English as She Is Taught. Being Genuine Answers to Examination Questions in our Public Schools. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1887. First edition. Sixteenmo in eights (6.125 x 4.75 inches x 155 x 120 mm.). xli, [1, blank], 109, [1, printer's imprint] pages. Publisher's yellowish brown textured (faux alligator skin) cloth, spine and front board lettered in black; top edge gilt, others untrimmed; plain endpapers. Spine gently leaning; spine ends pushed; corners a little bent; extremities worn. Page edges ruffled, the ones extending well beyond text block darkened in the extreme margins; sporadic marginal foxing with some light soiling; endpapers faintly discolored, from offsetting caused by binding glue. Very good. Twain's review, on pages xi-xli, first appeared in the April 1887 issue of Century Magazine; an excerpt appears in the U. S. edition. Twain prepared his own edition in 1900. BAL 3420.
