Mark Twain [Samuel L. Clemens]. The Innocents Abroad. Or The New Pilgrims' Progress... Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1869. First edition, third issue, with Illustrated History of the Bible on the third page of ads. Octavo (8.625 x 5.5 inches; 219 x 140 mm.). xviii, [19]-651, [5, ads] pages. Double frontispieces and twelve additional illustrated plates inserted throughout; numerous in-text illustrations. Publisher's dark brown cloth, spine and front board lettered and stamped in gilt, boards ruled in blind with decorative blind-stamped corner-pieces and a central publisher's device on the rear board; all edges of the text block trimmed; brown coated endpapers; flyleaves. Spine with just a hint of a lean; covers partially splitting at the joints with some fraying, potentially some early repairs to the ends of the front joint; backstrip still mostly secure but with a short horizontal closed tear extending from the front joint; spine ends worn; rear board with just a hint of soiling; corners bumped and worn. Hinges cracked but holding; some minor over-opening throughout; twenty-first gathering slightly sprung; previous ownership signatures. Good but still presents nicely. Mark Twain's second book.
