First English edition, with the first printing of two pieces not in the U. S. edition: "Christian Science and the Book of Mrs. Eddy" and "Diplomatic Pay and Clothes." Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 125 mm.). [8], 414, [1, small woodcut], [1, blank] pages with a 32-page publisher's catalog inserted at the rear, dated September 1900 (later state). Frontispiece illustration inserted. Publisher's orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board lettered and ruled in black and stamped in black and yellow; top edge of the text block gilt, others rough-trimmed; floral endpapers. Backstrip a little dulled with a few minor scuffs; shallow ridge to the spine; covers lightly rubbed (particularly on the front board) with a few specks of soiling; joints and edges slightly worn; corners bent. Top edge gilt lightly tarnished; some sparse foxing to the preliminary gathering; publisher's catalog tanned; rear hinge starting. Very good. BAL 3460. (#10120).
