J[ames]. Lackington. The Confessions of J. Lackington, Late Bookseller... In a Series of Letters to a Friend... London: Richard Edwards, 1804. Second edition. Twelvemo (6.75 x 4.125 inches; 170 x 105 mm.). [2, title-leaf (verso blank)], [v]-viii, 212, [4, index] pages, presumably lacking the half-title. Contemporary half-calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt; all edges of the the text block trimmed; brown endpapers, double flyleaves. Front board detached but present; backstrip mostly eroded and pulling away form the spine; boards rubbed, edges quite worn. Margins very faintly tanned; some light foxing; a couple manuscript brackets in the text; some trivial wear to the page edges. A very good text in a broken binding. Published the same year as the first edition. "In 1804 were published his 'Confessions' to make amends for having 'publicly ridiculed a very large and respectable body of Christians.' The book is much less interesting than his previous volume; some prurient and entirely irrelevant remarks about girls' boarding schools are appended" (DNB, pp. 370-371). (#10326).
