Glimpses of India
[Mark Twain (contributor)]. J. H. Furneaux (editor). [Glimpses of] India. A Grand Photographic History of The Land of Antiquity, the vast Empire of the East. London: International Art Co., [circa 1896]. First English edition, Imperial edition (also special limited edition) issue, limited to 1000 copies for export to America, this being out of series and unnumbered. Folio (10.75 x 13.5 inches; 275 x 340 mm.). [2, blank], xv, 33-544 pages. 500 photographic illustrations, full-page and in-text, some in full-color on inserted plates. Publisher's dark grayish blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, front board ruled and stamped in dark blue, rear board ruled in blind with decorative corner pieces; marbled page edges and endpapers. Spine leaning; covers worn, particularly at the corners, spine ends and joints; somewhat soiled; front board slightly bowed. Text block sagging and slightly shaken, as expected for such a heavy volume. Page edges a little worn in the preliminaries, occasional mild marginal soiling. Good. Brief letter of endorsement by Mark Twain printed on page iv, written from Bombay, commenting on the Bombay and Philadelphia first edition from the preceding year. Much less common than the first edition, which lacks Twain's commentary, with only one record found in Rare Book Hub (Auction Explorer Books, 2007, equally rough shape). (#10190).
