Dr. Mabuses Testamente
Fritz Lang (director). Dr. Mabuses Testamente. [Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse]. [Copenhagen]: Gloria Film, [circa 1933]. Original program for a Danish theatrical release. Sixteenmo (5.5 x 4.125 inches; 141 x 105 mm.). Unpaginated, 8 leaves. Illustrated throughout with full-page photographs from the film, including an exceptional two-page composite image across pages [8-9]. Originally a saddle-stapled binding, with the staples since removed; publisher's illustrated self-wrappers. Spine and edges just a little worn; corners very slightly softened; short (about one-quarter of an inch) closed tear at the top edge of the rear wrapper. Very good. "One of the first acts of the Third Reich was to ban Lang’s yet-to-be-released film, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. To Lang the reason was clear: Mabuse and his gang were reflections of the Nazis’ themselves" (Tom Gunning, "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse," Criterion Collection essay). The film's German ban is mentioned on the front wrapper. Criterion Collection, #231. (#10028).
